Types of Flat Alligators
Flat alligators are a type of crocodilian that inhabit areas in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. They are known for their flattened, elongated snouts which gives them their common name. Flat alligators can be divided into two main types: the Chinese alligator and the African dwarf crocodile.
The Chinese alligator is smaller than the African dwarf crocodile, reaching a maximum length of only about 3 feet. Its body is more slender than other types of crocodiles and its snout has a distinct V-shape. Its coloring is usually a light brown with darker splotches along its back and sides. It inhabits areas around rivers in southeastern China, where they feed on fish, amphibians, and small mammals.
The African dwarf crocodile is the smaller cousin of other African crocodilians like the Nile crocodile and the gharial. It grows to be around 6 feet in length and has a more rounded snout than the Chinese alligator. Its coloring ranges from sandy yellow to dark brown, with darker blotches along its back and sides.
