I think this is a great ending for Shinji. He’s learned a lot and grown as a person, and now he’s surrounded by the people he cares about most. They’re all happy to see him and he’s happy to be with them. It’s a perfect ending for him.

The ending was changed due to budget and censorship issues, so Hideaki Anno decided to create the End of Evangelion as a form of revenge against the fans. In reality, the fans should be happy that the ending was changed, as it is a much better ending than what was originally planned.
Why do EVAs use children?
The EVA are living beings because their mothers’ souls are what make them alive. The EVA activate when the child (pilot) is placed inside the womb (entry plug). Since the background story is the same for the rebuild movies, we can assume this is unchanged for rebuild.
The EVAs are more similar to Angels than machines, as each was grown from samples of the First Angel, Adam. Unit-01 is the only EVA created using samples from the Second Angel, making it more similar to an Angel than the other EVAs. However, all of the EVAs are designed to fight off the Angel threat.
What does Shinji realize at the end?
Shinji finally understands his feelings and realizes he’s the one who can literally save the planet, as well as the universe. He does this by confronting his father and becoming at peace with him. Then he does the same with all the other key characters: Rei, Asuka and Kaworu. By doing so, he sets the stage for the final battle against the Angels and ultimately defeats them.
Hideaki Anno, the director of the popular anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, has said that the main character, Shinji, is a representation of himself. This is because Anno went through a four-year depression after the airing of his previous work, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. Was the Evangelion creator depressed
Anno’s history of clinical depression was the main source for many of the psychological elements of the series and its characters. He wrote down on paper several of the trials and tribulations of his condition, which helped to create a more accurate representation of mental illness in the series. This is an important contribution to the mental health discourse and can help to destigmatize mental illness for viewers.

Shinji’s consciousness goes on an introspective odyssey while merged with Unit-01 in which he comes into contact with the soul of his mother, Yui Ikari. After speaking with Yui, Shinji is “reborn” from Unit-01’s exposed core.
What did Asuka mean by disgusting?
Asuka found out what he did to her unconscious body and said “disgusting” because they were one. She found out because they were connected and she knew what he was thinking.
It is clear that teens are the only ones who can handle the Eva’s and LCL(orange liquid that allows neural connection to Eva’s) as we see what happens when adults use Eva’s in the case of Shinji’s mother. She used Eva-Unit 1 and caused the Second Impact, resulting in her death. This just goes to show that teens are the only ones who should be using these things as they are the only ones who can handle them properly.
