Origin
On December 11th, 2016, Redditor Wiegand6 posted this MSPaint drawing of two astronauts gazing upon a flat planet to the /r/dankmemes subreddit. One astronaut exclaims, “What the heck is it flat!!!!” “Sorry, folks,” says the other astronaut as he waves a revolver at his companion. The joke received over 485 points in less than four years (97 percent upvotes).
On August 7th, 2018, an anonymous 4chan member submitted the original template which America was a surprise.

The template was not frequently used until almost a year later when “Ohio” became a popular variant of the template’s punchline, which coincided with the creation of Ohio vs. the World variants. In October of 2019, user iOhioian published an edit to iFunny that featured MS-Paint alterations. This post accumulated over 46,000 responses and 1,700 comments in less than a year. This was also shared on Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, and Instagram. Additional modifications were inspired by the image.
